In 2013, shortly before I founded Wink Naturals I was explaining the idea to a friend and they quickly said "Oh, so like homeopathic products?" I just shook my head and said “no”. Fortunately this response wasn't new to me because for the 8 years prior, I had worked in the natural products space and saw daily how confusing homeopathy was. Many confuse HOMEOPATHY with NATURAL. If you you're thinking, "Well, aren't they the same?" don't worry, I will clarify things a bit.
Let me first explain the definition of Homeopathy directly from the FDA website:
"The term "homeopathy" is derived from the Greek words homeo (similar) and pathos (suffering or disease). The first basic principles of homeopathy were formulated by Samuel Hahnemann in the late 1700's. The practice of homeopathy is based on the belief that disease symptoms can be cured by small doses of substances which produce similar symptoms in healthy people."--https://www.fda.gov/iceci/compliancemanuals/compliancepolicyguidancemanual/ucm074360.htm
So, in essence homeopathy is the belief that it is possible to cure an ailment, disease, or illness simply by applying micro, diluted doses of what is causing the ailment, disease or illness to that person. And the more diluted that dose is, the more potent the drug is - in their opinion.
Let me better explain this with an example. Imagine you're walking in the forest and brush your leg against poison ivy. It burns and itches so bad and all you want to do is get relief. According to homeopathy, taking a minuscule amount of poison ivy, putting it in water and then diluting that water/solution to the point where you reach "Water Memory" or the state in which there are no more poison ivy particles left in the water, but rather just the memory of those particle left in the water. This solution is then put in a bottle and you're supposed to rub it on the poison ivy rash and get relief.
The problem with this kind of remedy is that there is NO scientific evidence that this process actually works. Furthermore, there is no clinical evidence that the remedy derived from this process works either. Modern medicine has not endorsed homeopathic products for this very reason.
Homeopathic companies are marketing "remedies" for a wide range of ailments and diseases all with little or no research showing why or how they would work. With no scientific evidence backing homeopathic remedies and the fact that these products make drug-like claims make it very confusing for the consumer.
Aren't Homeopathic products still Natural though? Not necessarily. Because the FDA allows the manufacturing and sales of homeopathic products, they are still considered "Drug classified" through the FDA so you don't really know if ingredients in homeopathic products are natural or drug-free. They can also make claims that only drug-based products can make, the only difference is that the FDA doesn't require homeopathic manufacturers to prove their products are safe or effective like they do the drug companies.
If all of this is causing you to scratch your heads, you're not alone. If you're wondering why the FDA allows homeopathic products to be sold as a drug but without the data, research and validation, you're not alone.
In fact, just last year, the FTC urged the FDA to tighten restrictions on how homeopathic brands advertise. The unfounded claims of homeopathic products have cause thousands of customers to avoid seeking qualified remedies. For example, one popular cough and cold remedy marketed by a popular homeopathic brand is nothing more than a sugar water solution. Yet their claim is that it will heal flu, cough and colds. https://www.ftc.gov/system/files/documents/reports/federal-trade-commission-staff-report-homeopathic-medicine-advertising-workshop/p114505_otc_homeopathic_medicine_and_advertising_workshop_report.pdf
So what is a natural product?
Natural products are products that have ingredients derived from nature. They use things like flower and berry extracts, natural oils from plants, and essential oils to name a few. Natural products don’t contain artificial ingredients or harsh chemicals.
Where does Wink Naturals fall on the scale of natural products?
Wink was started with the mission to make natural, effective and safe products for everyone. Just like our names says, we are a natural company.
