What is Xylitol?
Xylitol is a sugar substitute that is derived from fruits and vegetables. Although it has gained quite a lot of press in recent years, it has been studied for decades - especially on it’s affect with oral health.
The studies can get very technical about different oral bacterias and “mutants” that cause havoc on oral health, but here is a great summary from a couple clinical studies with clinical links and resources at the bottom of the article.
How xylitol works and why is it good for your teeth:
Xylitol “reduces the adhesion of cavity inducing microorganisms to the teeth surface and also reduces their acid production potential (source 1). In other words, xylitol protects the teeth from cavity causing bacteria. It both helps the bad bacteria not stick to the teeth and helps it not grow and cause decaying effects on the teeth that leads to cavities.
The American Association of Pediatric Dentistry supports the use of xylitol as a sugar substitute for children (source 2). Like with all sugars and sugar substitutes, moderation is recommended.
Are there other benefits from xylitol?
There are other benefits from xylitol that we won’t go into in this post, that show that it also helps prevent grown of other harmful pathogens in the nasal cavity as well (see source 1 for more details).
